I Got It Card Game

Designed by an activity director at an Alzheimer’s care facility, the I Got It card game is simple, intuitive and rewarding. It only takes a few minutes to play a hand and there is a winner every time. The more players, the more fun.

Middle Stage: To play I Got It each player is dealt five regular size playing cards, face down. Once everyone receives their cards, the instruction to turn over your cards is given and everyone gets to see their hand. The leader then draws from their Jumbo Deck and calls out one card at a time card – number & suit – holding it up for all to see. When a card in your hand is called, you turn it over, face down. The first player to turn over all five called cards is the winner and yells out, “I got it!”

Middle/Late Stage: Deal only three cards to each player face up. The leader then turns over the top large card on their deck and players match only the number of the card. When a four is called, for example, and a player has a four in their hand, they turn it over, face down. As soon as anyone matches and turns over all three of their cards, they say ,”I got it”. This becomes a fast-moving, easy-to-understand, very fun game.

All that is needed is:

  • One set of normal cards (easy-to-read with large letters and numbers)
  • One set of giant 10" x 14" playing cards to hold up for all to see

What we like best about this game:

  • The game is reminiscent of so many card games that we played, both as a child and as an adult.
  • It draws upon lifetime skills associated both with lifetime card game skills and Bingo.
  • The game is intuitive and requires little in the way of instructions or achieving success.
  • It’s a fast-moving game with a frequent and multiple winners. Imagine if you are dealt a pair of fives and a five is called.
  • By using the jumbo cards each player receives both audio and visual cues as to the card called. No need to repeat the card over and over or to answer for those who may not have heard or remember what card was called out – just look up, and if you forget, look up again.
  • Hands last only a few minutes, as long as it takes to go through one deck of cards or until someone wins. Thus, short attention spans are not exceeded and a new game is begun before you know it, giving everyone another a chance to win. End result – everyone is a winner.
  • And shuffling the large cards is really not necessary since each hand changes by shuffling and dealing the smaller cards.

This game is perfect for those in the middle and later stages of dementia, who may not have the patience or desire to play games that may frustrate them, rather than provide pleasure. And if assistance is needed - just check your neighbor’s hand, “Hey, Sarah, you’ve got a King!”
